some images from my superhero course!

New term, another new class – this time on Superheroes! First time for me, despite having read these things since before I could read! And with it – I have a whole new syllabus that is made as a comic!

A few small things first, a cool brief podcast review of Unflattening from Singapore! A really thoughtful and thought-provoking take on the Makan and Meaning podcast – grateful for the kind words and a new perspective on the work, can watch that here. Also, I participated in the Sketch Your Mind visual thinking conference in the fall. Recordings are available on YouTube here, and my specific session can be found here. A virtual whiteboard summary of the entire event – which was really cool – is online here (takes a while to load).

After making a mini-comic for a new course last term (see here), I felt inspired to do something similar but give myself space to play and draw more (especially since it was drawing superheroes!) – and then I got a bit carried away!! It was quite a challenge and a race to get it done before the start of classes – went right down to the wire. But I had fun and students were geeked – so we’re off to a good start! Also, I crowd-sourced a list of superhero songs for the class and that’s publicly available here.

Want to download and print/fold/staple your own – grab the printable version here, and if you just want to view it as a PDF – can see the pages in a PDF here. And if you want the pages as individual pages in higher res (for coloring or printing larger) you can find a PDF of the individual pages here. (or to print as an oversized booklet here.) As always, all my syllabi (and other teaching resources) live here permanently. I learned about this minicomic format from Scott McCloud and Raina Telgemeier’s Cartoonists Club recent graphic novel – see the excerpt here for how to print and fold your own in this format! And see here for all my compiled resources on how to make mini comics of all sorts! Good thoughts to all. – N

Bonus, along with my songfest above, here are some of the scholarly books I’ll be drawing on to create the arc of the course…
